The majority of Agricultural developments are not exempt from planning and structures such as large poultry units, slatted sheds and ancillary farm buildings will require a planning permission.

There is a category within the planning and development regulations 2001 (Schedule 2, Part 3, Class 6 – Exempt Development, Rural) which allows for roofed agricultural structures or a combination of such structures not exceeding an area of 200m2 to be considered exempt developments. However, column 2 of the aforementioned regulations lists the conditions and limitations which apply to these developments, and professional advice should be sought in relation to proper interpretation.

Local development plans will also make reference to other requirements such as the provision of an EIS (Environmental Impact Statement) which may be required to accompany certain applications. The link below offers further guidance.
